Orsett Heath Academy

Homework

We use homework at Orsett Heath Academy to consolidate learning already acquired in the classroom. Homework usually takes the form of low-stakes, online quizzes. This provides an opportunity for students to commit knowledge to long-term memory, as well as providing teachers with vital information about student learning.

KS3

All homework assignments will be posted on Google Classroom. Each subject area will set KS3 students two quizzes on Google Classroom per half term. There are some exceptions to this rule:

  • The English department set a half-termly reading comprehension homework in addition to their two retrieval quizzes.
  • The Maths department set weekly quizzes on Mathswatch.
  • The PE department set one quiz on the Everlearner platform a half term.
  • The MFL department asks students to practice vocabulary and complete assignments on Duo Lingo, in addition to retrieval quizzes.
  • The Art department sets one practical task a half term, in addition to one retrieval quiz.
  • For drama, students may be asked to rehearse a performance in place of a retrieval quiz.

KS4

In KS4, homework assignments will be more frequent. In most subjects, KS4 students will be assigned three retrieval quizzes on Google Classroom per half term. However, subjects may set a variety of other tasks to help students prepare for their examinations. For example, students taking Art will need to work to deadlines to complete their portfolios, music students will need to rehearse their performances, while drama students will need to prepare their coursework. Additionally, some subjects may ask students to complete revision activities or answer exam questions to support their progress. The Maths department will continue to set weekly homework on Mathswatch.

Homework Support

All homework will be set on Google Classroom with clear due dates to help students’ organisation and time-management.

Homework club will run after school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the library, where there will be access to computers.

Non-completion of homework will be sanctioned in line with the school’s behaviour policy.
